Langston Hughes Bio by Alice Walker

Among the MANY biographies and books for younger readers about Langston Hughes, this one by Alice Walker stands out as it frames the early life of Hughes in ways can connect to. If focuses on the strength of Hughes as a person who remained true to his own dreams despite overwhelming challenges.

This is great read aloud book. Walker’s cadence and use of language makes it a pleasure to hear, and discuss along the way. If you don’t have time for that (48 pages and mostly text,) then it’s a good adult read for facts that you can relate to your own students’ lives.

A key takeaway in terms of work with Dreamline is to help students see how Hughes used his ability as a writer to help make his own dreams of a fairer world  become more real. He made unheard voices heard, which a primary goal of Dreamline.
