As many Dreamline followers know, Langston Hughes is the poet of the Dreamline Global Program. Years ago his poem “The Dream Keeper, “ with its line “Bring me all of your dreams you dreamers” was the launch point of a great classroom project that became the global program it is today.
This year, for the first time, Dreamline is able to collaborate with others who celebrate Langston Huhges in this special year commemorating his 125th birthday. Singing City Chorus, a 75-year-old organization that was founded as the first “inclusive” community choir in any American city, invited Dreamline to collaborate with them in a March 14 concert featuring the works of Langston Hughes set to music.
Five Philadelphia schools are participating in this collaboration by engaging their students with Dreamline and then celebrating their work at the performance. More than 200 students in grades 2-12 will complete Dream Banners that will be displayed at the concert reception so that all attending can appreciate their collected dreams.. The schools represent Philadelphia public, charter and independent schools, and their teachers are members of the Singing City Chorus.
Additionally, during one of the choral pieces, a musical setting of the Hughes poem “The Dream Keeper,” representative students from each participant school will take the mic to read aloud the words of their Dream Banners while the choir accompanies them in the background.
It promises to be a very moving event and is the kind of community collaboration that naturally arises from connecting students to their dreams and their dreams to the world.
Tickets for the concert are available here. At this time, we do not anticipate any livestream, but we will send an update if we learn of one. https://www.singingcity.org/dreamkeeper.
